At Portland Psychiatric Health I provide psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and brief supportive therapy for adults. I specialize in mood and anxiety disorders.
I have been a board-certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner since 2009 after graduating from Oregon Health & Science University, and have been practicing at Portland area hospital systems since that time. My psychiatric specialities include Consultation and Liaison Psychiatry and Emergency Psychiatry. In 2015, I completed post-graduate training at Washington State University and became board-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. My work in this area has included special interests in Sexual Health, HIV-related care, and Internal Medicine. In 2018 I completed a doctoral program at Washington State University and was awarded a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.
I value creating therapeutic relationships in which patients feel acknowledged and supported on their journey. I see patients from a strengths-based perspective and use medications as one tool with which we can alleviate symptoms and promote wellness. As informed by my training as both a Family and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I prioritize a holistic approach and provide safe, skilled care. I look forward to partnering with you on your journey to restore happiness and health.
Dr. Simpson has been voted Portland’s “Top NP” by Portland Monthly magazine for 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Regence/Blue Cross Blue Shield, Providence, United Health Care, MODA, Aetna, and Pacific Source Health Plans
As a board certified Psychiatric and Family Nurse Practitioner, I practice with the belief and knowledge that as individuals we are complex beings in which our mental and physical health are intertwined.
I utilize evidence-based practices to provide mental health services, whether that be through medications, brief psychotherapy, or complementary modalities such as mindfulness practices to support you in moving towards your optimal health. I believe in building a trusting relationship with each client to support shared decision making and treatment plans that fit your unique needs.
As a psychiatric nurse practitioner I have worked predominantly in emergency psychiatry, treating individuals experiencing mental health crises. My work has also included inpatient psychiatry, residential substance use disorder facilities, and transcranial magnetic stimulation for treatment resistant depression. I also believe in the power of education and have been an educator of nurse practitioner students since 2018. In 2017 I completed my Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Frontier Nursing University and in 2023 completed post-graduate training as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the same institution. My work as a Family Nurse Practitioner includes working with children and adolescents in local school based health centers. I am honored to do this work and it is a privilege to be a part of your healing journey. I look forward to working with you.
Dr. Andrea Hughes works with adolescents and adults aged 14 years and older. While her specialty is mood and anxiety disorders she also focuses on perinatal (pre and postpartum) individuals and those with insomnia and chronic pain.
Matthew Crabtree
MSN, PMHNP-BC
Crabtree Mental Health is currently in-network with the following insurance plans:
Regence/Blue Cross Blue Shield, Pacific Source, and Providence Health Plans.
I am a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC), with a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN). I have been a member of the medical community in Portland since 2013, practicing as a PMHNP since 2019. Since completing my training at Vanderbilt School of Nursing in the MSN program, I have provided outpatient behavioral health care in the private practice setting and urgent care mental health clinics, as well as crisis stabilization for patients experiencing mental health crisis in emergency department settings. Additionally, I have worked in the recovery community, substance use treatment centers and have provided medical assisted treatment for patients struggling with substance use disorders.
I believe that a collaborative relationship between patient and provider is the foundational cornerstone of a patient focused approach to addressing behavioral health concerns. As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I am trained in evidence based and trauma informed treatment models that address the concerns of the entire patient. The quality of our mental health directly impacts the quality of our lives and a supportive therapeutic relationship with a mental health care provider can be instrumental in achieving good mental health.
I hope to create an environment that fosters respectful, trusting, and collaborative therapeutic relationships where evidence based treatment plans can be created to increase a client's quality of life. Generally, treatment plans include both medication management and therapy.
My practice is open to individuals from 18-64 years of age. I treat patients with a multitude of presentations, however I specialize in mood disorders (depression and anxiety), men’s mental health, and substance use disorders.
